Heres to Amazing Progress by Jess (and Amazing Sunrises !)

Hello All Jessaholics, and I mean ALL Jessaholics,

Our Jess is more than halfway across the Bight and before you know it she will round Tassie.......I'll leave it at that for now as we need to start rationing out the excitement lest we go overboard (cliche ! cliche !). What !!?? Who am I kidding ??!! We were overboard from day one of this voyage !!

What strikes me about this community is how much positive energy everyone has and more importantly shares with everyone else. Just think about it......if it were not for Jessica, none of us would know each other or have the opportunity to share experiences of all kinds with each other. One of the really special things about this community is how well we respond with words of comfort and encouragement if needed !

On a personal note, please forgive me for not checking in more often than I should. My warehouse move got put back by a couple of weeks due to my ankle injury and since I got back on my feet, I have been pushing myself very hard to get everything set up the way I want it. The good news is that its almost done and consequently, you will see me more often here.

Lastly, I have included a picture of sunrise in Melbourne on 22 April 2010. I just happened to lift the blinds on my kitchen window at the perfect time.....ran to get my camera and squeezed off about 10 shots....this is the best one. I hope you enjoy it.

Good luck and warm wishes to all,

Jonathan

  1. Greetings to all!

Jonathan, thank you for looking out your window at exactly the right moment and grabbing your camera! That is an absolutely magnificent sunrise photo!!!

Rationing excitement??? Who can do that??? Jessica is in the home stretch! And I just found a ridiculously inexpensive flight to Sydney and am thinking of doing a very spontaneous thing....coming for Jessica's arrival! Not sure it will work out but am giving it some serious thought. (Is it pretty sure she will arrive May 9, not before??)

You are so correct in saying this is a positive, caring, special community that has formed due to our Jessica. THX for the pleasure of being a part of it!

Am keeping a close watch on the weather that Jessica is going through. I know she is a brilliant sailor....I worry a bit nevertheless. Will give a huge sigh of relief when I know she has passed safely through it.

    Blessings to all,
    Janell in Oklahoma, USA

    Hi Jonathan,
How amazing of you to catch nature in her best dress!!!Colours are fantastic.Knowing what Jesse is experiencing we need heavenly intervention on the weather front and a collective prayer I think. Thanks for your update and the use of your blog site and hope to hear more of you news.

  4. Hey Jonathan,
First time for me to say Hi to you at Jessaholics Ville, I think I remember that Sunset, our lounge room looks to the west and south and we always see the those magnificent sunsets although better if we were by the bay!

Well...we are in the doldrums between Jesse's blog posts...the weather is creeping up on Jess one look at the BOM has a scary looking cold front building....anyways if we're lucky we may hear from Jess later tonight?

I'm off to do some back tracking....

  5. Hi Jonathan,
I'm glad you've reigned in samurai, she obviously likes her champers, I thought she was gunna start inviting everyone on the boat, lol. (Just a bit green eyed, sorry)
I love the pics and gr8 to hear your ankle's on the mend.
You are right about the community. It's fantastic to be a small cog in the wheel of this blog family.
My mission is to get a photo of me on the Farm cove pier as first in line to welcome her home.
    Watch this space, lol.☺☺☺

  6. Greetings Jonathan,

Glad to know the ankle is on the mend. We need our feet in optimal working order! :)

Beautiful photo! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Yes, through Jessica and this blog a community has been born and populated by a group of really decent and affable people who project a maturity and collective positive energy. I sense also ... a great sense of fun and good humour! :)

The world needs such goodwill and kind spirit more now than ever. It's a pleasure to read all the posts and enjoy seeing others interacting and contributing to others with kindness, generosity, support and encouragement.

I thank you one and all for your own part in making this so.

Especially to Jonathan for creating this blog which has brought people together ... a BIG thank you!

Thoughts are with Jesse tonight as she faces those rough conditions out there. With all the positive thoughts being sent out to the universe, she surely must be sailing along enveloped in love and warmth and safety.

    Wishing all a happy weekend!

    Cheers from Soldier's Mum :)

  7. Hi Again to All,

Clint, thanks mate. Sorry I missed you and the others at the lunch. Hope to see you here frequently.

Hi Janell, call it mid-life crisis but in recent times I have done quite a few things spontaneously. I have never regretted doing any of those things including traveling without a plan, in fact, they have been highlights in my life. If you are looking for a little nudge, you've got it from me. Visiting our great country will truly be a highlight in your life. Go on, (as Nike has been saying for decades), just DO it !

Hi Soldiers Mum, I did not have any idea that this community would continue to grow as it has. Setting up this blog was the easiest thing in the world and I am so glad I did. I am also happy to see you here frequently.

To all my fellow Jessaholics, have a wonderful weekend !

    Cheers

  9. Hi Jonathan and all,

Jonathan, thanks for the wonderful photo and your thoughtful comments about what this blog site has done for the group that read and provide comments on it.

It is likely that most of us, if not all, have learnt something from reading Jess's blog and this Jessaholic site has become a valued alternative forum for many to express their thoughts, so you can be proud of setting it up.

Jessica has, I think, taught us all to be more positive and decisive, and to show greater caring and concern for others, and the friendships established through the blog and through our meetings will probably remain in our memories as one of the great things we participated in from October 2009 to May 2010.

Jess's arival is now two weeks away and it is evident that many people are considering how they can best enjoy the occasion. Hopefully we will be able to pool the photographic and video efforts taken from a number of different places around Sydney Harbour so we can all enjoy different views of the occasion.

    Cheers,

    Tony L

  11. That is a beautiful sunset shot Jonathan, thanks for sharing. I hope your ankle is much better now.

Jessica has just posted a new blog. We can all breath a collective sigh of relief as she made it through the storm, knockdown and all, relatively unscathed. What a champion she is! And she sounds like she's having the time of her life, good on her! Now I can get some sleep.

Sally, your wreath looks excellent and a terrific tribute to those we lest forget.

Janell, I don't think I can stand all this excitement. Are you really coming? It would be really cool if you do.

Well hello there Magpie, nice to see you again.
Missed ya! You seen my new art yet? I've also got some pics up on my samurai blog. :-))

  12. Jonathan,
If you don’t mind, I would like to re-post one of my comments to Jessica’s blog from months ago. When I posted it, I had no idea that the pseudonym “Jessaholics” would stick. I just came up with it to tickle my own funny bone, but as it turns out, I think that it truly is an addiction albeit a good addiction. I just wanted to sincerely thank you for providing your blog for all Jessaholics to share their support for not only Jessica but for each other. You’re right that it’s because of Jessica that we have had the chance to get to know each other. But you also have given us the opportunity to gather as a Jessaholics Support Group and I appreciate it very much.

    From several months ago:

    “Jessica,
It’s so good to hear from you. In a way, reading your blog everyday is almost like attending one of those support groups for an addiction. ”Hi, my name is SaltyDog, and I’m a Jessaholic. An addiction like this can cause sleep deprivation and affect productivity at your job. Do you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night and sneaking out to the computer, surfing the web looking for your next fix of Jess. Some days I wake up with the shakes and I see pink elephants (or I mean pink sailboats.) But with the support or those of you who have the same addiction, we can all get through the tough days when we don’t have Jessica. But I have to admit that nothing can replace the way that I feel when I get my next fix of “Jess.” The good news is my doctor says that this particular addiction is very healthy and wholesome and he highly recommends it………………….

    Happy Anzac Day all.
    And thanks again, Jonathan

  13. Dearest Jessaholic Community Support Team,

Special thoughts on this special day of ANZAC memories. Lest we forget.

Hiya Jonathan, great to hear from you and your stunning photo. Glad things are shaping up for you at last.

Ohhh, where do I start? Each and every one of you has written with such heartfelt perfection recently, I feel I have little more to offer.

I do wish to emphasise that I feel incredibly privellaged to be 'one of you guys'. The team spirit we share here is both endearing and empowering. To have so many cyberpals (many in the USA)is a thrill for me. I am delighted to be part of the email clan where info reaches all of us within minutes. As well as the cheeky banter!

Magpie, again it's great to hear from you.

Thanks for your photos SaltyDog and Richard, It's amazing how we all build an image of people in our minds. For example, Mark you don't look at all salty, nor do resemble anything anything canine! I was pleasantly surprised.

Janell, great news, hope you can 'DO IT'. If so, could you collect a package in Kingwood, WV for us? It's not heavy, you could even take it in the cabin with you.....catch my drift eh?

Ugh, I know I will forget someone or something, but it's time for some business...

We have one spare bed in our 5-cabin in Sydney from Friday 7th to Mon 10th May inclusive. Cost is $35 per night if 5 of us shack up. Trust me, you will be sleeping with some exclusive company!!

That's enough from me for a day or two, so enjoy your weekend everyone, Especially you (the little lady in the pink boat)

    Love to all,

  15. Good morning everyone......LEST WE FORGET.

Mark, I just wanted to say "DITTO" to you and I kid you not, if I had your piece to read out to Amanda when she intrviewed me over the phone the other day, it would have been a lot easier for me to convey our sentiments to her.

Almost our entire conversation revolved around that very topic you so eloquently put into words. I did my best to cover most of what you've said but we laughed alot too and got a little silly as you may well imagine. It was all very light hearted, good fun. :-))

I wanted to say so much more about the "greater community" of worldwide bloggers but, in her true professional manner, Amanda kept steering me back to her intention of writng about this certain addiction of these "Jessaholic" type characters, some of whom she intends to catch up with in Sydney.

Kind regards to you and everyone...Sam

PS, if I may...I now have 2 blogs on the go..."Voyage Art" as well as my original "samurai" where I've posted some pics you may or may not have already seen. So, to quote a joke I once heard..."My name is Cliff, drop over some time." ....haha, pretty corny, I know, sorry.

    Cheers!

Sam has indicated Lest we Forget...it is a special day indeed....

  17. Hi All,

LEST WE FORGET....a day in remembrance of all the brave young people who gave their lives for our great country and for those who continue to sacrifice their lives for us.

Whew ! Tough day for Jess ! None too worse for the wear, though ! I am just willing her on past the Bight because low pressure systems come out of the south in waves, one after the other. She is such a gutsy girl, taking it all in her stride.

My wife and I drove up to Mansfield, Victoria today. This is arguably one of the best country drives one can embark on from Melbourne. North up the Melba Highway, you pass through Victoria's South East Wine Country, then on to Yea and Mansfield. Great day out and while passing through every country town, flags were at half mast and it was great to see quite a few veterans about, enjoying the absolutely spectacular weather.

Hey Mark, nice rewind ! Maybe thats a good thing to do every now and again. If someone wants to do the same and quote a memorable entry.....go right ahead.

Sally By the Bay, you continue to outdo yourself ! I hope you have a catalogue of all your work !

Thanks Tony, and everyone else for your kind words. Just makes me feel more positive about life in general.

Sam, I want to congratulate you on the success of your efforts to get this group recognised by Julie, Roger and Andrew. This will make all the difference to our Sydney visit. Well done ! Great follow through !

I'm away on business for a few days next week but will sign on frequently to say hello.

    Good luck everyone !

Ok folks, we have happily filled one 5-bed cabin...any takers for another ??

We have the opportunity to host a very special guest from America (and she is bringing a parcel)and I want to make this happen.

Can we inspire more of you to travel to Sydney for Jesse's Homecoming? We need 4 more people to share another 5-bed cabin for at least 2-3 nights at the same Park we are staying.

Alternatively, any faithful Syneysiders willing to host our guest....5-star Aussie Style? This will include travelling to the Harbour for the day on 9th May (Mother's Day.

May I come in here? Wow what fabulous support you ALL have been. I read each and every comment and I am amazed. It was so wonderful to meet Jessica's Mum, Julia, last Saturday in Mooloolaba. She is a natural, lovely, person and spent nearly two hours with us. Tim did a great job in organising the lunch.

It is great that there is such a worldwide support for Jessica and I am sure that has helped her to keep on keeping on, sweet girl that she is!

You guys have all been amazing with your comments, support, rhymes, art, music, craft (Tony) etc - how special each and every one of you are!

I am privileged to have met you all, and thank you Jonathan for allowing us on your blog!

If anyone didn’t get the Email, and would like to be part of our Jessaholic Photo Gallery, we need a photo that we can crop and add. We will have a photo of Jessica in the middle, with Jessaholics around. We have room for 29 photos, and will use your blogger name. Oh Sam, I'm glad that is one EACH ! heheh

BTW, I just booked my airfare to Sydney as well yayayayayayay!!

  28. Collette,

Thanks for the idea to raise funds to pay for my airfare to Sydney. But if I could pull that off, I would probably make sure that my nieces got the plane tickets instead of me. In all honesty, if I could possibly get away right now, I would ask the airlines to tie me to the roof rack of a 747 if necessary to get to Sydney. It really is hard to miss out on the celebration but my thoughts will be with all of you.

  31. Hi All,
I don't know enough about sailing to know how worried I should be about our young Jessica. 12 metre waves sounds enormous. We sit comfortably at our computers and write humorous and serious bits and pieces about Jessica's journey, our own plans, our own lives, our thoughts ... but gosh, the young girl who brought us together certainly isn't sitting comfortably at her computer. Tony, Sam, anyone .... can you fill us in a little about these weather conditions? I know Jessica and EPL have been through rough weather before and Jessica has experienced knockdowns and a 180 degree knockdown so the boat and Jessica's skills can get her through huge and rogue waves but I do worry. I'm glad she has headed north again to 'ride through the storm' rather than try to keep to the anticipated arrival schedule. Just stay safe Jessica. Stay safe.

Jamie has described some of the weather he is experiencing down south too. They are so brave.

Lovely to hear from Fay from the Gold Coast. Enjoy your cruise and be happy knowing you will be cruising along on the ocean at the same time as Jessica.

Janelle, lovely to hear you will be venturing out to Oz and I look forward to meeting you.

    Toodle-pip (hee hee)

  32. Hi Ailsa and everyone else,

Twelve metre wave height is certainly enormous and when compared to the height of a three storey house waves this high seem unbelievable. It is not just the height of the wave that is important. The distance from wave peak to wave peak is the other factor - and we don't have information about that. If the wavelength (peak to peak) is great the waves have a more gentle slope than they do when the wavelength is short - which produces nasty high and steep waves. If the wave length is long then EPL will simply ride easily from peak to peak but if the wavelength is short then there is greater danger. The other factor to consider is whether the wave pattern is regular as in a large well established swell or whether it is a confused sea resulting from a change in wind direction. In a confused sea rogue waves that are steeper and come from unexpected directions can create problems and Jessica's knockdowns have probably all occured from rogue waves rather than strong wind. There is really nothing Jess can do to avoid rogue waves other than what she is already doing by sailing a course which attempts to avoid the full force of the frontal systems she must sail through. Jess has superb boat skills and now a second-to-none knowledge of how EPL behaves in all sorts of conditions. She has stated that she knew this part of the voyage would be difficult - so she has obviously researched and been prepared for what she is having to face. I expect she and her trusty EPL will come though all of these fronts in the safest manner possible and make the most of the better conditions that follow each front.

I hope that helps without scaring you too much.

Since everyone seems to be now toodle-pipping ....

    Toodle-pip to all,

    Tony L

  33. Thank you Ailsa for asking the questions which have been uppermost in our minds but too scared to ask.
It was good to hear from you Tony with the explanation of wave patterns. I have been watching the weather charts along with Chris. We both had to shudder at the thought of Jesse facing this when she is probably very tired and the boat showing some signs of wear.
It is reassuring that the shore crew have so much experience in this area and will be giving her the very best advice.
We hold her in our thoughts and will be sooooooo relieved when Jesse and EPL head north to Sydney.
Sally in Melbourne by the Bay

  34. Tony,

Thanks for the very nice explanation. I do know that an average person would be advised to have a change of underwear with them if they were about to experience 12 meter waves. The large, long rolling ocean swells can be caused by weather conditions thousands of miles away. As they get closer to land, decreasing depths can cause the swells to become closer, steeper and taller. The bad news is that it sounds like Jess is experiencing those very large swells from miles away combined with a strong front with gale force winds, which will cause the seas to build on top of the swells. Opposing wind and currents can also cause the seas to really “stand up.” Tony is absolutely correct that rogue waves are Jessica’s biggest threat in these conditions. But Jess and EPL have proven their ability to handle these conditions.

The good news is it sounds like the winds should subside soon and even if she is left with large rolling swells, the confused seas should diminish. We’ll all sleep a little easier when we get the next report from her.

  35. Hi everyone, I have one nerve left and Huey is really getting on it!!! I've held off on all my YeePee'ing for the moment.

I would like to add my two-bobs worth and mention that heaving-to is another viable option for Jessica in these extreme conditions, although I believe she has a drogue on board and has in all likelihood already deployed it.

Heaving-to effectively stalls the boat, keeping it's "slick" 90_deg to the waves and therefore offers protection against breaking waves. Of course, as Tony has mentioned we don't have any information as to the distance between wave peaks which is a considerable factor.

I've experienced heaving-to three times coming across Bass Straight a few years ago with success, allowing all on board some respite and the opportunity to catch up on some shut-eye.

On the other tack...what Tony has explained about the dangers of short wavelengths and Mark about decreasing depths is precisely the reason the shore crew are recommending Jessica takes the longer way down around Tassie than cut across Bass Straight. I believe Jessica will be much safer as well as less stressed with more sea room.

As much as I have every confidence in Jessica's abilities and in her preparedness for these very conditions, I worry deeply about the freakish and the rogues that occur well beyond the control of the very best sailors.

Let's keep all our fingers and toes crossed for our two lovely ladies and hope these storms abate sooner rather than later.

Take care and see you all at Jessica's...Sam

  36. Hi Jessaholics

Thank you to Tony, Mark and Samurai for your descriptions of the conditions that our dear girl is going through. Sorry but it hasn't really eased our concern for her, we have been thinking of her all day and listening to weather reports. We will only be relieved when we here that Jessica is safely through this and on her way home.
    @Ailsa beautifully said.

  40. Hello All,
Jesse has just posted again, and is using a drogue. Good move. I don't know whether this is the Jordan drogue that someone at the cruisers forum claimed she had, or not. She also just had a another knockdown, with dishsoap everywhere. That piece sounds a little funny, but actually IMHO is pretty bad developement because of the slipperyness. All she can do now is hang out and watch for chafe on the lines, and put in chafing protection if needed. I read more about the Bass Strait, not only shallow, but lots of islands! I also read more about Bruce Arms. He is quite the guy!

    toodle what?

  41. Hi all,
Many thanks Tony, Mark and Sam for explanations about the conditions Jessica is currently experiencing. A little boat so exposed to nature's whim. Jessica and EPL are certainly resilient. I hope the course of safety first is followed. Bass Strait doesn't seem to be an option and from what I can work out there is more bad weather forecast for Tuesday. I can't imagine Jessica could be around the tip of Tasmania prior to that. I don't know how typical the current conditions are for this time of year and if it would be anticipated to continue. Broome is nice at this time of year!!!!

    Sally, great picture - again.

  47. Hi guys,
Thanks for the nice comments and the Trophy Sally really cool and to be honest I think I've earned it too anybody that's been following my posts over these six months would be aware of my efforts to be a first poster and I've often been totally gob smacked at how quick some folks are at getting there posts in first I sort of gave up trying a month ago but Hung Kwan set me off again!....it's funny because I was literally sitting on the keyboard last night to get ready then around 8:30 during dinner I refreshed the screen and it was still the old blog then within 2 seconds I refreshed the screen again and bingo there be a new blog form Jesse, so very quickly pasted my "prepared before" message typed in me name, website, email, which is auto-remembered, makes it quicker, and if anything typing in the security feature slows you down a bit but still I did it all pretty quickly!....soooooo do you think I was surprised to see Bruce form Brisvegas as first POST!!!!!...I couldn't believe it....and look how big his post was too!....I thought that's crazy how quick was Bruce...and then there were up to seven other posts that followed...and I thought "my god" how quick do you have to be!!!....anyway it wasn't until this morning that I did a quick check and discovered that Andrew had placed me first...good onya mate!....I knew I was there somewhere....and now I've got to go and explain to Bruce from Brisvegas how I got there first when he was clearly the first poster last night, he's posted a comment further down wanting to know how I must of hacked the website to actually get my post in first!...but the fact is I got in a good three minutes earlier its just Andrew hadn't got around to sending my post out until later....so there you go, all in good fun but you have to be sitting on your computer every minute to catch that new blog from Jesse to have a chance....whew!...sorry for all that...

  50. Hi everyone,

I sure feel like I have a big knot in my stomach right now with concern for Jessica and I know that all of you feel the same. Regardless of how tough and how positive she is, Jess has to be feeling almost totally drained right now. All that we can do is hope that the weather eases a bit for her and keep giving her our support. Even though it’s hard to feel light hearted right now I wanted to share a story with you. My supervisor just told it to me after he found out how interested I am in Jessica’s voyage and it tickled my funny bone.

My company has an office approximately 600 miles inland from where I live. There’s no saltwater in that area but they have a large beautiful lake called Flathead Lake. One of our employees, who I’ll call Ed, retired several years ago and decided to take up many new outdoor recreational activities. He’s the type who will go out and buy the most state of the art equipment for those activities and then consider himself an expert, even if he’s never used it before. We all know those types of “experts.” Well, he decided to become a sailor in the form of windsurfing. He bought the finest sailboard he could find and even though he had never sailed anything in his life, he now thought that he was an expert sailor. One day when he got to Flathead Lake, a friendly bloke at the lake began asking Ed about sailing, so now that Ed was an expert windsurfer, he spent quite a bit of time trying to explain sailing to the gentleman. The gentleman finally thanked Ed for the nice conversation and before he left, introduced himself. It was Robin Lee Graham that Ed was explaining sailing too. LOL. Ed had no idea who Robin Graham was until someone told him the next day. Since then, Ed has become friends with Robin Graham, who now lives in Kalispell with his wife.

Nothing but positive thoughts for Jess! Have a great day, everyone.

  51. So Mark,
Your supervisor had a talk with you after the IT guy noticed an unusual web surfing history, and that you had started biting your fingernails? ..........Just kidding.......... I am a computer network admin for a company, and I give daily updates to one of the legal assistants. She probably thinks I'm odd, but is amazed by the story. My wife is tired of hearing about it (she's no sailor, thats why I am a singlehanded sailor), and says get a life. I say why watch TV when there is an incredible real human drama unfolding right before your eyes! Go Jesse!

    Toodle...........pip!
    Richard

PS When it comes to strange inland sailing: I lived in New Mexico for 20 years. There was a very small lake in the north named Heron, where scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory would keep their boats. Some were over 30 feet long, with radar and gps, autopilots, etc. Ready for the ocean. The lake was four miles long and two miles wide! I guess they liked playing with the electronics!
When I lived there,at one point I sailed on even a smaller lake near Sante Fe on an Indian Reservation, and once drifted through a full immersion baptism ceremony on a West Wight Potter with a broken outboard motor. As I drifted among the hymm singing church members, one of the congregation grabbed the rail, and said "Howdy Brother, your just in time for church!.

  52. Hi all,
Well done Clint - first. I wanna, I wanna. Once I thought I was going to be first but there were no comments listed due to a malfunction of the site. Enjoy your trophy from Sally by the bay.

Well, our young Jessica is on the move again. Thank goodness for her brilliant yachting skills and obviously a magnificent yacht.

Thanks for the funny boat stories Mark and Richard. At this point I can add mine. My late husband, Denis, bought a yacht so down we went to Blackrock for the big launch. Goodness it took hours just preparing it to touch water. Once out to sea we were going east/west/north/southeast/northwest/south/east/ ... etc ... etc. Then, after about an hour or so we were heading back. I asked 'are we going in now'? Denis said 'yes, this is the first time I've managed to get the yacht to sail towards the shore'. I had thought he was brilliant doing all those manoeuvres but the whole time he was desperately trying to learn how to steer!

  54. Poor Jess, how utterly exhausting and frustrating for her at the turn of events. We will continue to send out positive vibes.

On the lighter side, and we have to cheer each other up, I loved the funny boatie stories --- When my husband and I were about to set sail from Cape Town (bound for New Zealand) the local yacht club were horrified that we were leaving on a Friday ... apparently a nautical taboo. Not being superstitious (and slightly arrogant) we ignored the warnings, cast off the lines and backed out of the mooring only to be greeted by “I told you so” as our forgotten shore power line stretched out like a strained rubber band!

We will be leaving on a more sedate 12 day cruise tomorrow, from Brisbane to New Caledonia. Keep well everyone and our thoughts will definitely be with Jessica while out on the water!

  55. Fay, how funny! I got a mental picture of that and of Richard's, Mark's and Ailsa's stories too. Sadly, I don't have a funny story to contribute but can relate very well to the taboo about picking up the pick to go anywhere on a Friday.

The only time I remember ever doing it, I fell straight into a hole at the bottom of the companionway steps as I went down below to grab the winch handles shortly after getting the anchor up. Someone had lifted the floorboard out and forgot to tell me. Consequently I hit my lower leg so hard against the side of the hole, it shifted the muscle on my shin about an inch up my leg and never recovered, leaving me with a dent on my leg. As much as it hurt at the time, I now consider it a trophy, funny enough, and a reminder that there is something to be said about superstitions. I also believe the one about bananas on board but that's a whole other story. :-))

  56. Here's my boat story, - nothing spectacular, but it's mine to tell! lol-

When the MOTH [man of the house] was still in the navy, they used to have a "family day at sea" so the NOK could experience and see what goes on on our ships.

The kids were still little but old enough to be excited to be going on Daddy's ship. :)

I was also quite excited as I'd never been on a war ship at sea before. We were to sail out through Sydney heads and off shore some distance as two ships did a ship to ship transfer andother "show off" exercises. :)

Being a lover of food and in those days the navy cooks did an excellent job, I was especially looking forward to the sumptuous banquet which was to be served.

Well ... sure enough, i was as sick as dying dog! LOL

In fact, I'd started feeling queasy before the ship left the wharf! lol The only way I was able to see that day through was to remain on deck in the fresh air and NOT go below decks or even inside at all lest I risked losing my breakfast!!

Totally missed the sumptuous lunch! lol

Have a good day everyone! :)

    Cheers ......... Soldier's Mum :)

  80. The other day I saw the weather and wave forecast for the day Jessica was assumed to round Tasmania, May 1-2, according to my excel sheet with forecasts for arrival to the remaining waypoints. I got and still am very worried about her, since the wave forecast showed 10-12 meter waves close to Tasmania, for the 1-2 May. How much can this girl take?

Anyway if you want my latest forecast on arrival to Sydney, I can just say that on 1 May she had 770 nm to Sydney shortest distance around Tas (158 nm to my waypoint at Southeast Tas). Since I have guessed 90 nm straight distance covered per day for the last leg, this gives 8,3 days more and arrival late on 9 May. On the open Indian Ocean she covered around 100 nm straight distance per day, and after Cape Leuwin more like 70. The weather forecast hints 20 knots upwind after Tas, and waves from the side, not 100% fun. My personal guess now is arrival 10 May, but it is hard to know. You can make your own guess based on 770 nm remaining on 1 May.

May everything go well, I am nervous. I hope Abby don't get worse, she will pass Tas in June/July.

  81. Ahoy Jesse=o=holics !!

I bring you good news. According to the Examiner, Jesse has cleared Tasmania !

    http://www.examiner.com.au/news/local/news/human-interest/tassie-turns-on-rough-welcome-for-watson/1818562.aspx

I too was getting VERY nervous when they showed her position so close to the lee shore of Tasmania, with Passage weather showing west winds and Eastward moving swells. There was another recent news story that said she was exhausted and her arrival to Sydney would be delayed till the 15th. If the Examiner story is true (and I have no reason to doubt it), she is in much better position now, having cleared the dangerous lee coast. Jeanne Socrates went through the Bass Strait from west approach to the east in 48 hours a few days ago. From one of the articles, they said they want to keep Jesse away from shipping, so this could be why they routed her around. It also means she has rounded another one of the great capes!

  82. Thanks Richard and Ben for the updates. Your excel predictions have been a lot of fun throughout Jessica’s voyage, Ben. Thanks for sharing them with us. Boy, did I give a big sigh of relief when I read the Examiner article regarding rounding Tasmania. Although she still has quite a stretch to go, I can’t help but think that the worst is behind her. My gosh, she deserves a respite from the conditions that she’s endured in the past week or so. She is an incredible individual. It’s also very good news to hear that Jeanne Socrates made passage of Bass Strait. Here’s the last entry that I saw on Jeanne’s website:

    “April 24,
Recovering from Storm last night 14 hour steep 6 meter swell, wind 35-46kt, occasional lull to 28 kt.
No sleep at 7pm -- Seas calming down but still big sailing gently. Australian Coast guard plane flew by at noon.
Called me Ella's Pink lady. I asked him where she was. He came back and reported that she is 56 ml to NNW. My worries confirmed - Crossed paths but now know she's astern of me. Like me she wanted to avoid the center of the low and worst of the weather. more cold fronts mon and wed with strong winds.”

    Take care, Jessaholics.

  90. Greetings to Everyone!

What a relief that Jessica is heading North! When I read her blog something got in my eye too...like some of the rest of you. And my heart beat a little faster as well. Yea Jessica!

Hopefully everything will go well for her as she heads HOME. I, for one, won't be completely at ease until she ties up at the dock and I'm looking forward to being somewhere in that crowd when it happens. I'll probably be way too far away to actually see it but I'll hear the cheer and know that she has 'completed her journey'. And I'll be jumping up and down, screaming and yelling just as loud or louder than everyone else.....

I feel so privileged to get to be there with so many of you, to get to hang out with some of you, and to take in all the excitement of Australia welcoming your young Champion back home! This is really a special occasion in more ways than one!

You received a pressie to remember with Jesse rounding her final Cape. Let's not forget that lovely shiny trophy Sally made for you the other day...very spoilt boy Clint..

It's been a magnificently joyous day knowing that Jesse is out of that menacing weather and sea. Lets hope her last days up the coast and round about are absolutely glorious for her.

The Sydney trip suddenly feels more 'real' and arrangements are being synchronised nicely.

  109. Hi Molly,

So sorry to read on here about the passing of your husband. We were out of town all this past weekend and I did little if any blog reading either here on or Jessica's blog. Prior to leaving last Friday, I had been on dial-up only due our DSL service in this area being out for several days and well . . . . I just plain missed it until today. We had gone to Nashville, TN for our nephews wedding and were right in the middle of all of the flooding and a day later leaving Nashville waiting for a clear road to open up.

I have a vivid memory of reading your first post on Jessica's blog last year and clicking your profile which said "Married and crazy about my husband". That one short comment spoke volumes about you and the relationship that you shared for all of those years.

God's peace be with him and you as you deal with this emptiness in your life. You have many friends here among the regulars any of whom will reach out to you and offer their support when needed.

  110. @ Michael,
Glad you chimed in with a request that the Queen intervene ! I was the "anonomous" that implored Sir Richard to beseech the Queen to intervene.

I have a feeling that she will get many very justly deserved awards in the future. I think it is cruel that Sailing World gave ammo to the knockers at this point. Nancy has no heart.

It seems as though Jesse is taking this better than we are! I suppose after what she has been through, this is no biggie! She is a tough cookie in all ways. I liked her comment
"Well, what have I been doing for the last six months?"

  111. Magpie, you’re a strong man to stand up and admit you addiction, as if any of us could hide our addiction. Spending time watching your daughter’s netball game instead of golfing is a big step in dealing with it. We’re all here to help each other if we need it. I know all of you have helped me deal with my Jessaholism. Fortunately, there are no other addictions that are nearly as wholesome as this one.

Molly, much more important than us helping each other with our Jessaholism, we're all thinking of you right now. I hope that you know that you have our support, our thoughts and our prayers. Take care, Molly.

The days are counting down now for Jesse's triumphant return home. What a great girl she is, aye? Gives hope for the future of our country with young people such as Jessica. If she never does another thing, that's absolutely ok! She's already accomplished more than some ever will in their entire lifetime.

Anyways Jesse is nearly home.... woohoo!!!!! She is finally after all this time getting off the back pages of the paper if she's even featured at all. The Advertiser here in Adelaide have blatantly ripped off her blog and pictures when they've bothered to put anything.

Looks like I won't make Sydney which is very disappointing $$ + health but that's OK I'll have my own celebration here hopefully they'll cover it live on TV and I can celebrate with the blog family online I'm sure Jesse's blog will go in to meltdown on that day !! 116. Hi Everyone in 'holicland,

Well, the grand finale of Jesse's voyage is nigh. By this time next week, hopefully, Jesse will be on dry land, albeit concrete, and probably wearing her wobbly boots!

Nutralady, I feel for you, it must be a really frustrating tome for you. Be sure to watch the Ten network on Saturday, we'll give you a big wave and blow you a kiss.

As I speak Janell is in the air on her way to Oz...what a lady she is. I guess you are still checking in with us here Janell, so please enjoy your flight as much as possible. The only good thing about it from my point of view is that is doesn't take 20hrs like it does to London!

Faye and Max, you're also on your way today, so please drive and arrive safely.

Jesse's blog has over 1000 comments, a huge reaction from around the world regarding that rediculous purposely-timed hogwash about a record or some such thing. Thank heavens I've already forgotton the woman's name.

If Jesse is not making a record, well, she's certainly making history!

In light of that, you really can't have one without the other.

@All the Jessaholics family... Cheers. We must all be bubbling with happiness, savouring these last days as Jessica is doing. PAS! Though I am still worried that her AIS could suddenly fail in the middle of tha big ships' traffic. I can't wait knowing her crossing the finish line and enter through the heads, triumphally. Brings me tears.

  136. Hey, all you Lucky Jessaholics!

I'm positively green with envy!! I know you'll all have a wonderful celebration, and {{{ HUGS}}} all around!!! I'm going to wear my pink shirt, so I'll be celebrating from afar!!! I can just see it now . . . a sea of blue, and then a bigger sea . . . of pink . . . pink, everywhere . . . pink flags, pink balloons, pink shirts, pink hats, pink hair (probably), and hopefully pink fireworks, and a beautiful pink sky . . . later in the day!!! Oh yes, and don't forget the pink champagne!!!

Have a wonderful welcome home party, one that will last your whole lifetime . . . remembering this very special, very unique, time when Jesse was the catalyst that brought all you amazing, talented, people together, . . and, she managed to do it while circumnavigating, this beautiful planet!!! I have no doubt that you are all, now, life-long mates who will forever continue to appreciate and support one another!!! Thanks for letting me tag along in my own smaller way.

Would love to be there to help you all celebrate, but will have to do the next best thing. I know that there is a webcam that shows Sydney Harbour, but it's on some sort of a delay, and it's from a distance, so probably won't be able to tell Ella's Pink Lady from all the other boats. I'll be watching for the Polaris too!! I'm not confident that there will be coverage here in the US, since we haven't heard anything yet . . . even though a couple of us have written requesting that they report on Jesse, and her progress . . . so far, nothing! Very disappointing!!!

I can really almost feel the party mood you're all in right now, the euphoria is another thing that's contagious!!! Have a gobsmacking good time, and don't forget to report back to us unlucky ones, tellings us all about it when you return!!

If possible, I hope someone will take lots of pictures and post them. I know Sam, you said you'd be doing that, but hope to see you in some of them too, so, the more the better! Also, hope that someone will be able to take a photograph of the flag that the McGrath's are planning on presenting to Jesse!!

Only three more sleeps . . . or is that only three more nights when I don't get much sleep!!! (Actually, it'll be at least four more, because I'll be up "watching" the festivities on the web, and your days are my nights!!! Live it up!! Make it memorable!!! Give Jesse a big hug from the rest of us!!!

    Good Night you Gorgeous People!!

    Toodle Ooo, Pip-Pip!!!
